ENGRAVING by John Hall (1739-1797) Johann Caspar Lavater was a swiss theologian and philosopher known throughout Europe for his studies on physiognomy. Following the physiognomy tradition of Della Porta and of many Renaissance and Baroque philosophers, he believed that the character of a person could be elucidated through examining their lines of countenance" i.e. tracing a profile outline portrait. Being able to "read outside" was the key to "know the inside". Lavater's thought largely influenced Art in the late 18th and early 19th century, as in the case of Johann Fuseli and William Blake (who realized two etchings for Lavater's English edition of his Essay). Lavater was convinced that he could show his theories by analyzing the portraits of some of the main historical figures of the past, in some cases taken from paintings or (mainly for antiquity) sculptures. Condition: Good Plus. 1st Edition. Volume III only of the four volume set. This work consisted of three volumes issued in four books, with Volume 2 split over two books. So this volume is actually book 3, containing the final part of Volume 2. Early 19th century ribbed brown cloth binding with paper title label to spine. Fading and marking to covers, bumping to corners. Occasional foxing and a few marks to the text. A few pages have slight loss to the margins, with some old paper repairs. Page 303/304 has a horizontal tear, with old paper repair. Old inked price and a previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown endpaper (Arthur William English).
