La Révolution éclate alors que Lavirotte est aspirant à l'école d'artillerie d'Auxonne en même temps que Napoléon Bonaparte. Il fait campagne, de 1793 à 1798, à l'état-major de l'armée du Nord auprès des généraux Saint-Germain, Dardenne, Souham, Malher, Rostollant et du futur maréchal Brune. À l'armée de Hollande en 1799 et 1800, à l'armée de l'Ouest en 1801 et 1802, Lavirotte retrouve le maréchal Brune sur les côtes de la Baltique et le suit à travers les guerres de l'Empire. Grâce à ses relations maçonniques, il devient vérificateur des comptes et découvre l'Italie. En 1811, il entre à l'Inspection générale du Trésor et conduit un convoi d'or d'Italie en Pologne. Il est nommé sous-inspecteur de 2e classe en 1813, inspecteur de 2e classe en 1819, puis de 1re classe en 1822. Il devient receveur particulier des finances et exerce à Saint-Etienne dans la Loire, puis à Autun. Érudit local, membre de l'Académie de Dijon, fondateur et animateur de la Société Éduenne des Lettres Sciences et Arts, il publie en 1837, " Les Annales de la Ville d'Arnay-Le-Duc ".
