Add to basketLeather. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). Two very scarce 16th century volumes bound as one in contemporary calf, uniting the first Latin edition of Alberti"s celebrated description of Italy with Irenicus"s influential humanist survey of Germany. In a contemporary panelled calf with red morocco label to spine. A fascinating volume, bringing together two 16th century humanist geographical and historical surveys of Italy and Germany. Alberti"s influential chorography of Italy is bound with Irenicus"s wide-ranging description of Germany. Compromising: 1567 Descriptio Totius Italiae by Leandro Alberti. First published in Bologna in 1550, in Italian, by Anselmo Giaccarelli, this is the first Latin edition. Leandro Alberti (1479-1552) was a Dominican friar, historian, humanist, and geographer from Bologna. A close friend of most of the contemporary literati, frequently mentioned in the letters of the poet Giovanni Antonio Flaminio. 1570Totius Germaniae Descriptio by Franciscus Irenicus. First published in 1518 as Germaniae exegeseos volumina duodecim, this is a later edition. Franciscus Irenicus (c.1495-1553) was a German humanist historian and theologian associated with the intellectual culture of the Reformation era. ()4 (*)6 A-P6 Q8 R-3X6 3Y4 (?)6 (:)6 (?)6 (*)6; ?4 A-Z6 A-M6 N4 (lacking O6) [VD16 F 2817] Collated. With the armorial bookplate of Sir Frederick Evelyn, 3rd Baronet, and further ownership inscription "J. E." to the front pastedown. Together, these works form an ambitious account of the geography, customs, antiquities, political organisation, and regional identities of two major European territories during the early modern period. In a contemporary panelled calf with red morocco label to spine. Externally, a little worn. Previous owner's small ink inscription to titles. Spine ends split with slight chipping. Joints starting, but holding. Chip to lower front board. Small area of loss to rear board. Headband loose. Rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in slight loss to calf. Slight fading and spotting to boards, heavier to perimeters. One or two scratches and handling marks. Lacking ties. Bookplates of Sir Frederick Evelyn, 3rd Baronet and J. E. to the front pastedown.Small ink annotations to front endpapers. Slight discolouration to endpapers from binder's glue. Paper to rear paste down lifting slightly. Worming to endpapers, more so to paste down. Internally, generally firmly bound. Hinge strained at title page, exposing cords. Very small perforation from worming to rear visible from A6 of "Germaniae" onwards, not affecting the legibility of the text. Very minor loss to fore edges of N3-4 of "Germaniae." Slight age toning, heavier to fore edge and first and last few leaves, notably bright and clean for the period. Light scattered spotting to fore edge. Minor soiling to title page of " Italiae" with minor damp stain. Very Good. book.

[Venezia] In Vinegia, Giovan Maria Bonelli, 1553, Terza edizione.
