Says that Chequers has been "thoroughly photographed twice since our alterations" (1910 and 1917), but that she would be glad to allow Shorter to have other photographs taken. Country Life does not give the Lees copies of these photographs, but does sometimes allow other newspapers to reproduce them. "I remember very well the luncheon at Lord Curzon's about a year ago - Would you care to come to see Chequers before we leave?" The Lees acquired Chequers in 1909, the Chequers Estate Act was passed in 1917 and the couple left in 1921.

A lovely production. Arthur Hamilton Lee, 1st Viscount Lee of Fareham, GCB, GCSI, GBE, PC (8 November 1868 - 21 July 1947) was an English soldier, diplomat, politician, philanthropist and patron of the arts. After military postings and an assignment to the British Embassy in Washington, he retired from the military in 1900. He entered politics, was first elected in 1900, and later served as Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and First Lord of the Admiralty following the First World War. He donated his country house, Chequers, to the nation as a retreat for the Prime Minister, and co-founded the Courtauld Institute of Art. Julius Bache was born to a Jewish family[1][2] in New York City.[3] His father, Semon Bache [né Bach] (1826-1891), emigrated to the United States from his native Nuremberg[4] Bavaria, settling in New York City where he started the glassmaking firm Semon Bache & Company.[5] In 1881, he started work as a cashier at Leopold Cahn & Co., a stockbrokerage firm founded by his uncle. In 1886, he was made a minority partner and in 1892 took full control of the business, renaming it J. S. Bache & Co. Jules Bache built the company into one of the top brokerage houses in the United States, outranked only by Merrill Lynch. In the process, he became an immensely wealthy individual, a patron of the arts, and a philanthropist. Inscribed by Author(s). Book.

The first letter (addressed to 'The Editor | Cambridge Daily News') begins: 'When I received my L.L.D Degree from the University (in June 1931) you published in your issue of June 6, some photographs of the procession to the Senate House on that occasion.' He is writing 'on the off chance' that 'original prints' survive, 'as I am most anxious to obtain one, for my Autobiography, if it is in any way possible to do so'. In the second letter (to 'Mr. Stuart') he thanks the editor for the trouble he has taken: 'The photograph is excellent and exactly what I wanted.' He is also 'much amused' by Stuart's 'reminiscence of the Hastings Election (1906, I assume), but shocked to learn (what I had entirely forgotten) that I could ever have spoken against my old friend Freeman Willingdon!' (Fareham was a Conservative, and Willingdon a Liberal.) He recalls that he has stayed with Willingdon 'in India & elsewhere so often since; and was his Sponsor when he took his seat as a "Viscount", in the House of Lords; some 15 years ago.' To prove that there is 'no permanent breach', he is sending a photograph taken when Willingdon 'gave away the Prizes at Cheltenham College - of which I was President'.

Lee (1868-1947), soldier, diplomat, and politician, helped found the Courtauld Institute and also served as a trustee and chairman of the National Gallery. "In 1917 the Chequers Estate Act was passed by which Lee and his wife presented to a trust, for the use of successive prime ministers for ever, the mansion and estate of over 1000 acres in Buckinghamshire which they had acquired in 1909 and entirely restored and equipped with appropriate furniture, works of art, and historical relics. In January 1921 the trust was brought into operation and Lord and Lady Lee finally left the house with its entire contents. They provided an endowment of £100,000 for its upkeep "Lee had acquired a remarkable knowledge of painting and the fine arts generally before and during his years of furnishing Chequers, and he now began a second collection with zest and a rare flair for finding and acquiring masterpieces of all schools and dates, in which he revealed his real love and understanding of craftsmanship. He was active in the art sales of the 1920s, fuelled by the need of many gentry families to sell off their art collections during the post-war depression, and made many astute purchases. He bequeathed the whole to the Courtauld Institute of Art, the original conception of which was due to his imagination and energyIn 1929 Lee gained financial backing from the industrialist and art patron, Samuel Courtauld, and from the art dealer, Joseph Duveen. Further negotiations with the University of London led to the announcement, in October 1930, of the creation of the Courtauld Institute of Art, under the management of a committee chaired by Lee. At Lee's suggestion William Constable was made the director of the institute, which opened in October 1932 offering degrees in the history of art, the first such degree course in Britain."ODNB. The majority of this second collection, described here, was bequeathed to the Courtauld Institute upon his death. The first volume describes 58 pictures and 9 pieces of sculpture and tapestry (numbered 59-67), and the second inventories numbers 68 to 110, the majority of which are paintings, with some silver and sculpture. Each item is illustrated and thoroughly described with biographical notes and provenance information. Borenius (1885-1948), the catalogue's compiler, was a Finnish art historian and considered a leading scholar on Italian art of the Renaissance. Fine presentation copies, both inscribed by the Viscount: "Peter Lauriston Melville Lee from his great-uncle" A few notes on provenance in pencil by the previous owner.
