First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Lee J. Ames (illustrator). 1st Edition. Ralph Nading Hill. Robert Fulton and the Steamboat. Illustrated by Lee J. Ames. New York: Random House, 1954. Landmark Books series. Octavo in blue-gray cloth stamped in maroon and dark brown with steamboat vignette and laurel border; 181 pages; illustrated throughout with Ames's period drawings. A well-regarded midcentury biography for young readers chronicling inventor Robert Fulton's determination and ingenuity in developing the steamboat - transforming American transportation in the early 19th century. Hill's lively narrative and Ames's clean, kinetic illustrations make this one of the more collectible early Landmark titles, blending history, science, and biography. Condition: Good to Very Good. Spine slightly darkened and boards show light spotting (common to this issue); sound binding; pages clean and unmarked except for a prior owner's period bookplate ('Douglas Cashell') on front pastedown and penciled date 'October 1954' on flyleaf. Interior bright and well-preserved. Edition Note: Copyright 1954 with no later printings stated; this copy represents the true first printing in original cloth (preceding later pictorial and reprint issues). Ralph Nading Hill (1917-1987) was an American historian and author best known for his works on New England maritime history and technology, including The Winooski and The Shipbuilders of Essex. His clear prose and enthusiasm for American innovation made him a frequent contributor to the Landmark series and other midcentury historical works for young readers. Lee Judah Ames (1921-2011) was an American illustrator, artist, and author, celebrated for his distinctive, energetic pen-and-ink style and for his long career producing illustrated nonfiction for children. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Ames studied at the Pratt Institute and began working for Walt Disney Studios in the late 1930s before turning to book and magazine illustration. He gained national prominence for his work on midcentury educational series such as Random House?s Landmark Books and Signature Books, where his crisp, accessible drawings helped bring history and biography to life for young readers. His collaborations with authors like Ralph Nading Hill and Elizabeth Rider Montgomery became staples of school and library collections during the 1950s and 1960s. Ames later became widely known for his 'Draw 50' series - step-by-step art instruction books beginning with Draw 50 Animals (1974) which have sold millions of copies worldwide and influenced generations of young artists. His hallmark was a balance of technical precision and warmth, perfectly suited to books like Robert Fulton and the Steamboat, where his ink-and-wash illustrations evoke both the mechanical ingenuity and human ambition of America's early inventors.
