Seit 1866 a.o.Prof., wurde er 1872 Primararzt an der Irrenabteilung im Allgemeinen Krankenhaus in Wien, bis er 1875 die Leitung der Psychiatrischen Klinik der niederösterreichischen Landesirrenanstalt in Wien übernahm. 1886 wurde er Mitglied des Obersten Sanitätsrats. Leidesdorf begründete den klinisch-psychiatrischen Universitätsunterricht in Österreich. Daher kommt es denn zum Theile auch, dass trotz aller Bemühungen von Seite der Irrenärzte, die Kenntniss der Seelenheilkunde leider noch immer kein Gemeingut des ärztlichen Publikums geworden ist. Praktische Aerzte kommen aber nur zu häufig in die Lage, an Orten, wo sie keinen Specialisten zu Rathe ziehen können, Irrsinnige behandeln, ja selbst begutachten zu müssen. Man kann ausserdem mit Bestimmtheit behaupten, dass von der mehr weniger zweckmässigen Behandlung einer beginnenden Seelenstörung häufig der Verlauf derselben, der günstige oder ungünstige Ausgang abhängen wird. Ich glaubte daher einem allgemein gefühlten Bedürfniss zu entsprechen, indem ich es mir zur Aufgabe machte, die Lehre von den psychischen Krankheiten in thunlichst gedrängter Kürze für den ausschliesslichen Bedarf des praktischen Arztes darzustellen; damit derselbe in jedem einzelnen Falle sich ohne Schwierigkeit, so weit der gegenwärtige Zustand unsres Wissens es gestattet, zu recht finde."
