Jahrhundert - eines komplizierten geographischen und ethnischen Raumes.Im ersten Teil geht der Autor ein auf die Geschichte der friedlichen Durchdringung des tschechischen Raumes mit Slawen und Germanen und deren fruchtbare Koexistenz über einen langen Zeitraum hinweg, bis Reformation und Gegenreformation und schließlich der Dreißigjährige Krieg Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft, Konfession und Stand, Besitz und Chancen radikal veränderten. Machtpolitik mit religiöser Begründung führte zu Vernichtung, Vertreibung und Enteignung, Zwangskatholisierung und Ideologisierung und einer Bevölkerungsverschiebung großen Ausmaßes. Mit der Nachkriegsordnung und einer neuen Verfassung werden Sprachzugehörigkeit und gesellschaftlicher Stand neu definiert, Adel, Bürgertum und Bauernstand neu gruppiert und Macht und Reichtum neu verteilt. Gewinner dieser Epoche ist vor allem die katholische Kirche, die nun die Prachtentfaltung des Barockzeitalters einläutet. Der Verfasser stellt vor allem die Frage, wie es den einzelnen Bevölkerungsgruppen dabei erging und wie sich ihr Zusammenleben entwickelte.Im zweiten - geographischen - Teil wird das schwere Los, das diese Geschichte einzelnen Regionen, Städten und Dörfern durchaus unterschiedlich hart zugefügt hat, dargestellt und bis in beispielhafte Schicksale einzelner Bürger hinunterverfolgt.
