Per questo motivo i due commenti alla parte iniziale del vangelo di Giovanni, le Explicationes, composti da Lelio Sozzini (Socini) e poi dal nipote Fausto, costituirono il testo fondamentale della dottrina sociniana, che nel corso del '600 fino all'Età dei Lumi venne considerata l'eresia per eccellenza. La storia della redazione e della diffusione delle Explicationes, pubblicate in forma anonima nel 1568, presenta i tratti di un vero e proprio Ğromanzo bibliograficoğ, che la presente edizione critica si prefigge di ricostruire, passando al vaglio la notevole quantità di dati e di studi che si sono accumulati negli anni.
