Il dogma trinitario, ossia la nozione della identità di sostanza di tre persone (padre, figlio, spirito santo) nell'unità dell'essenza divina, formulato per la prima volta durante il concilio di Nicea del 325, assunse un'importanza teologica tale che non fu messo in dubbio né dalla Chiesa ortodossa, né dalle principali Chiese nate dalla Riforma. A fronte di questo ruolo essenziale per l'identità stessa del cristianesimo, si pone l'esiguità dei luoghi biblici sui quali esso si fonda: l'inizio del vangelo di Giovanni e le parole contenute nella prima lettera di Giovanni (V, 7-8). Per questo motivo i due commenti alla parte iniziale del vangelo di Giovanni, le Explicationes, composti da Lelio Sozzini (Socini) e poi dal nipote Fausto, costituirono il testo fondamentale della dottrina sociniana, che nel corso del '600 fino all'Età dei Lumi venne considerata l'eresia per eccellenza. La storia della redazione e della diffusione delle Explicationes, pubblicate in forma anonima nel 1568, presenta i tratti di un vero e proprio Ğromanzo bibliograficoğ, che la presente edizione critica si prefigge di ricostruire, passando al vaglio la notevole quantità di dati e di studi che si sono accumulati negli anni.
