Art / Print / Poster First Edition
Wraps. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Scarce, in this form, with only a single institutional copy noted on OCLC First Search, at the National Library of Medicine. The publication records and celebrates a nationwide contest held by Hygeia, a monthly publication of the AMA, of high school students to design the best poster promoting health in some way, with what aspect of health completely open to the student to choose. The result was an enormous diversity of more specific topics, including diet, sleep, exercise, hygiene and cleanliness, disease prevention, and innumerable aspects of each of these. Over 200 of the best entries are shown here, generally nine per page, with the winning poster shown on the cover with the title "Drink Lots of Water", with a prize of a whopping $100 -- real money back then -- but we think many of the others are equally as good, and we are struck with the panache and professionalism exuded by so many of the posters. While there is a diversity of styles, the overarching commonality is a affinity to what might be regarded as a streamlined Art Deco aesthetic, which of course was the ascendant poster style of the mid-1920s, and no poster epitomized simplicity better than the winning one. 4to. 29 by 22 cm. 31 pp. Reprinted from "Hygeia" issues, August, 1924 to March, 1925. From August to February, four pages were devoted to entries in each issue. While the contents of this brochure are a reprint though, we believe that the comprehensiveness or form is different here, meaning that you will not find this brochure presented identically in Hygeia. We credit William Helfand as an author, although he is not credited anywhere in the publication, based on the OCLC entry. John Lemon contributed an article to the publication, "How to Plan a Poster", which presumably accompanied the promotion or solicitation which inaugurated the contest. Undoubtedly among the posters there were degrees of emulation and outright copying of posters then in circulation, but we see this as little different than commercial artists doing the very same. We would surmise that some of the adolescent artists did later forge careers as professional artists, but who they were we can not say -- there were no names that jumped out at us. We believe the brochure is not just a rarity in and of itself, but it is also commemorating a rare event. How many poster contests of any form have been so encapsulated? we wonder. The wraps have a film of dusty soiling, much of which, but not all, can be cleaned with an eraser if one is motivated to make the effort -- we have tested this proposition. Some light and flattened creases. One leaf near the back has a tiny chip or tear, about 2 mm in whatever direction, with most of the chipped piece actually still holding. Easily a brochure in Very Good condition, in our estimation.
