Der Kampf war beendet, die Heimfahrt nach Griechenland aber voller Gefahren. Die mächtigen Götter des Olymp waren Freund oder Feind des Helden, so verschlug ihn das Schicksal bis an die Grenzen der damals bekannten Welt. Auf seinem Irrweg erfuhr Odysseus die Liebesidylle zauberhafter Frauen und begegnete Ungeheuern von seltener Gestalt und Kraft. Er erlebte auch Tapferkeit und Mannestreue seiner Gefährten sowie Leid und Schmerz um ihren Tod. Auf Ithaka, dem Ziel der langen Heimfahrt, widerfuhr ihm das Glück in der langgeprüften Treue seiner Gattin, seines Sohnes und mancher alter Krieger. Solche Geschehnisse im Altertum der Geschichte haben durchaus einen realen Hintergrund. Sie wurden einst von dem griechischen Dichter Homer aufgezeichnet und in Versen zu einem Epos gestaltet- ein Stück Weltliteratur voll zeitlosem menschlichem Erleben. In der deutschen Sprache liegen Übersetzungen der Odyssee ebenfalls in den Versen des Hexameters vor. Bei dieser heute nicht mehr geläufigen sprachlichen Form und bei einem Umfang von vierundzwanzig Gesängen mit vielen Verszeilen spricht dieses Werk nur einen begrenzten Leserkreis an. In der Gestaltung von Karl Ferdinand Lempp wird dagegen die Odyssee dem Leser als Roman in einer lebendigen Prosa dargeboten- verständlich, daß so die Lektüre des Homerschen Epos zu einem echten Erlebnis wird, das weit mehr bedeutet als lediglich ein literarisches Wissen um ein altes Kulturgut. ; Gewicht:529 g.
