Straus is best known for her relief stone monuments created for the New Deal-era Resettlement Administration's planned community of Greenbelt, Maryland. Limited to 600 copies of which this is no. 428. Small quarto (27.75cm.); original cloth in white photo-illustrated dust jacket; unpaged; photographic endpapers, full-paged color-blocked copper-plate engravings throughout. Jacket a hint shelf-worn and rather dust-soiled with small soil stain to upper panel, else Fine in About Very Good jacket. Signed on half title and inscribed and signed on front free endpaper: "For Bernarda [Shahn] with love and happy memories. Lenne." Quarto, linen, publisher's gilt morocco spine label, [78] pages, illustrated with sixteen full-page copper-plate engravings, printed intaglio on a Meeker and McFee etching press, each numbered, signed and dated by Lenore Thomas Straus (and "inserted with hinges"), plus two engravings on copper, "relief-printed with the type on the same pages." Also reproduces black-and-white photographs by the author. Nicely printed, from hand set type, on 'J. Perrigot Arches Special MBM, France' paper. Also signed by the author on the half-title page; illustrated with sixteen full-page copper-plate engravings, printed intaglio on a Meeker and McFee etching press, each numbered, signed and dated by Lenore Thomas Straus (and "inserted with hinges"), plus two engravings on copper ("relief-printed with the type on the same pages"). OCLC lists only eight worldwide holding (for all issues of this title) [Brown, Yale, Columbia, University of New England, SUNY (Buffalo), LC, St. John's College (Santa Fe) and California State University (East Bay)]. American artist Lenore Thomas Straus (1909-1988), was raised in Chicago, studied at the Chicago Art Institute; during the depression, she moved to New York City, and later (in 1935) to Washington, DC. She worked for F.D.R's Resettlement Administration and produced a number of large stone carvings for the Administration's construction of planned communities in various states including Greenbelt, Maryland; Greendale, Wisconsin and Greenhills, Ohio. While a W.P.A. artist, she carved a large (12 by 4 by 4 foot) limestone figure of a mother and child for the town center of Greenbelt, Maryland, as well as a number of other smaller figures for the town. Her work has been shown at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, Chicago Art Institute, the Corcoran Gallery and The Baltimore Museum. She was awarded the Maryann Harman Award by The University of Maine in 1987; she died in 1988, at the age of 78. A fine copy [issued without dust jacket].
