An attractive portrait of Mr Hochart. An original pastel, signed by Lenuitre [?] or similar. We have been unable to identify the artist. A note to the rear of the frame says that the sitter is Monsieur Hochart. It also notes that he was the grandfather of Mme Conscience, and that she in turn was the grand mother of Mme Guillert. The note also states that Mr Hochart died in Puy Guillame (in the Auvergne) in the war of 1870 (Which was against the Prussians / Germans). The location seems unlikely, as this was about 100 km away from the front line at the end of the war and the French surrender, but perhaps he was sent back with injuries or died of an illness in camp? Whatever the truth, this is an attractive original portrait of a French gentleman at the time of the Second Empire. 31cm x 24cm under a passepartout of 41cm x 33cm. .
