Traduction par Paul Sabatier du roman historique écrit de 1944 à 1946 « Waffen für Amerika », qui paraîtra par le suite sous le titre de « Die Füchse im Weinberg « . Se déroulant principalement à Paris après la déclaration d' Indépendance des États-Unis en 1776 et mettant en scène l'homme d'affaires et écrivain Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais et l'émissaire du Congrès américain, le futur Président Benjamin Franklin, mais aussi Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette et Voltaire, l'auteur décrit une intrigue politique extrêmement complexe dans laquelle tous les protagonistes doivent défendre leurs intentions contre la résistance de leur propre environnement. Louis XV souffre de l'extravagance et des intrigues de son épouse, Beaumarchais doit composer avec ses créanciers et Benjamin Franklin souffre de la présence à ses côtés de l'intégriste puritain Arthur Lee, qui complique les négociations avec la France. Lion Feuchtwanger a commenté comme suit son roman dans la postface d'une autre édition : "Vous comprendrez aisément que le héros du roman n'est pas Benjamin Franklin, ni Beaumarchais, ni le Roi, ni Voltaire, mais cet agent invisible de l'histoire qui, découvert au XVIIIe siècle, a été clairement reconnu, décrit et décrit au XIXe siècle vanté, puis amèrement nié et calomnié au XXe siècle : le progrès. ». Lion Feuchtwanger (Munich 1884- Los Angeles 1958) issu d'une famille bourgeoise juive assimilée de Bavière mais qui rompit avec le judaïsme, connut une gloire mondiale en publiant en 1928 son roman « Le Juif Süss », qui dénonçait l'antisémitisme et qui fut traduit en une vingtaine de langues, mais dont le régime nazi, s'empara pour le pervertir, en l'adaptant au cinéma en 1940 à des fins de propagande antisémite. En janvier 1933, alors qu'il est aux Etats-Unis, les nazis mettent à sac sa maison, confisquent ses biens, lui retirent sa nationalité et interdisent tous ses livres. Il s'exile alors en France et devient un des chefs de file des intellectuels allemands antinazis. Avec Bertolt Brecht, notamment, il publie « Das Wort », le plus important des périodiques antifascistes édité par des émigrés allemands. En 1936-1937, il réside un an à Moscou. En 1939 il est emprisonné dans un camp français comme tous les originaires d'Allemagne, nazis ou antinazis, mais s'évade et gagne les Etats-Unis, qui lui refusent la nationalité américaine pour ses accointances avec le communisme. Il reçoit le Prix National de la République Démocratique Allemande et, en 1957, le Prix de Littérature de la ville de Munich. / Littérature allemande.
