Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Publisher's original soft cardboard binding. Octavo 20 x 14 cm. Wrappers, 303 pp. Print run 5,000 copies. Near fine condition, cover shows some rubbing and slight edge-fraying, diagonal creaser across front cover; internally almost fine. Seldom seen first edition of the second book by Russian Jewish writer Leon Ostrover (1890-1962). He began writing in Yiddish in 1913 and later switched to Russian. Authored many historical novels and stories which focus on Jewish issues, also contributed for the artistic and biographical book series 'The Life of Remarkable People'. The current novel describes life of Jews in the Pale of Settlement during the First World War. Book's wrappers illustrated with eye-catching constructivist design by prominent Jewish-Ukrainian avant-garde artist, cubist painter, stage designer and book illustrator Nathan Altman (1889-1970). During his studies in Paris in 1910-1912, Altman was influenced by Cubism and Futurism, which formed his further painting approach. In 1918 he was appointed a member of the IZO-Narkompros (the Department of Fine Arts of the People's Commissariat for Education). He worked for the Monumental Propaganda plan conceived by Lenin, and created agitprop art. He co-founded the periodical Iskusstvo Kommuny (Art of the Commune), an avant-garde futurist publication with poetic "editorials" by Mayakovsky and contributions by Chagall and Malevich. During the 1920s, Altman became acquainted with such major Russian Jewish writers as Isaak Babel, Ilya Ehrenburg, Yuri Libedinsky, and others, for whom he designed books.
