Condition: Very Good. . Hardcover. Chatto & Windus / Institute for Strategic Studies, 1962, 1st edn. with dust cover in fine condition (5mm closed tear at top of spine); red cloth in mint condition; xii+210pp+6pp index; The fear that many countries may come to possess nuclear weapons in the near future is a potent force in international politics today. The spread of nuclear technology for civil purposes, the knowledge that China is intent on producing an atomic bomb, the prolongation of the Geneva negotiations on a nuclear test ban, have heightened these fears. This book is an assessment of the real, not just the theoretical, likelihood that other nations, in addition to the present nuclear powers, will decide that their security depends on manufacturing or acquiring atomic weapons. It has been written in the conviction that previous studies of this subject have concentrated too much on the purely technical aspects of the problems to the neglect of the political, economic and strategic factors which will influence the actual decisions of governments. The authors, who are respectively the defence and science correspondents of The Guardian, have, therefore, based their analysis not only on a close examination of the technical developments, which may simplify and cheapen the process of developing nuclear weapons, but also of the other factors?strategic, political and economic?that are as likely to restrain governments from taking this step as to encourage them. The second part of the book consists of a study of the programmes of today's small or embryo nuclear powers, Britain, France and China, and of the situation in those countries where the question of nuclear weapons is being most actively debated?Canada, Germany, India, Israel, Sweden, and Switzerland among others. The final section contains practical suggestions, based on this close analysis, of the various means by which the spread of nuclear weapons can be halted. 8¾x5¾". . . . . . Hardcover. xi, [1], 216 p., 23 cm. Occasional footnotes. Index. This is Studies in International Security Number 5. Leonard Beaton was a noted Canadian journalist who also was long associated with the International Institute for Strategic Studies [IISS] (London). This study was undertaken for the IISS consistent with its aims of fostering public discussion of defense and disarmament. The possibility, in the early 1960s, that there might be a steadily increasing number of countries that would come to develop nuclear weapons was a daunting prospect that helped propel the international community to support measures such as the Non-Proliferation Treaty. This study looks as the drivers for a decision either to pursue or forego nuclear weapons on the part of a number of countries and expressed the hope that its approach could be applied to other countries over time. Very good. No dust jacket. Cover has slilght scuffing, wear and soiling. Pencil erasure residue on fep. Presumed first U.S. edition/first printing.
