Successore del beato Balsamo, alla guida della benedettina Abbazia della Trinità di Cava, fu eletto il 13 dicembre 1232, governandola per 23 anni. - Fu uomo dolce e pacifico, saggio e abile amministratore; durante la lotta tra il papa e l'imperatore Federico II che contraddistinse tutto quel periodo, Leonardo seppe destreggiarsi con intelligenza, senza inimicarsi alcuno, salvando così l'abbazia. Infatti egli fu chiamato dall'imperatore nel 1245, insieme ad altri ecclesiastici, affinché perorasse la sua causa davanti al Concilio di Lione; lo stesso imperatore ed i papi Innocenzo IV e Alessandro IV, moltiplicarono le concessioni ed i privilegi alla badia, che assunse un ruolo ed un'importanza notevole per tutto il Medioevo. I monaci osservavano con fervore la Regola e enerosamente soccorrevano le popolazioni colpite dalla guerra. Nel 1249, la città di Benevento distrutta dai germanici, affidò all'abbazia la custodia delle reliquie di s. Bartolomeo e il tesoro diocesano; quando le reliquie furono restituite, una porzione del capo venne donata alla badia. Il degno e santo abate morì il 18 agosto 1255 e fu sepolto dapprima nella grotta 'Arsicia', il luogo incorporato nella chiesa abbaziale, che fu usata dal fondatore s. Alferio, per la sua iniziale vita eremitica. Nel 1641 gli fu data una diversa sepoltura davanti alla porta del coro; attualmente le sue reliquie sono conservate in un altare laterale della chiesa abbaziale. Il suo culto fu confermato da papa Pio XI il 16 maggio 1928, la sua festa liturgica ricorre il 18 agosto. …
