Hardcover. Condition: Very good condition. Second edition. Quarto. [6], 266pp., 26 plates. Original illustrated red cloth with gilt lettering and extensive decorative borders in gilt, silver and red on cover and spine. Marbled edges. Decorative endpapers. Publisher's device on title page. Red ribbon marker. Translated from Polish by Leonard Brixen, with twenty-six b/w full page illustrations by Elwiro Michal Andriolli. This work is a poetic saga set in Poland. It tells the story of a family which, for several generations, has stood for progress within the Jewish community. The family's last descendant, Meir Ezofowicz, a young man, revolts against the obscurantism of his milieu, and the forces of doctrinal darkness by the Sephardic rebbe Nehemiah Todros. This novel is exquisitely illustrated with 26 b/w full-page photomechanical reproductions after steel-plate engravings by Polish artist Elwiro Michal Andriolli describing scenes from all aspects of daily Jewish life. Text in German, Gothic script. Light wear along edges of binding with very light fraying at head of spine, two and a half inches closed tear at tail of back joint, lightly rubbed and slight one inch discoloration of red border on front cover. Minor foxing, not affecting plates with images. Block with light age-toning, mostly along edges. Ribbon marker detached and frayed at edges.
