Leonhardt war 1907-20 Erster Kapellmeister des Theaters in Hannover und dann zwei Jahre in der gleichen Funktion am Nationaltheater Weimar. Von 1922 bis 1937 war er dann Generalmusikdirektor in Stuttgart und bis 1945 auch Lehrer an der dortigen Musikhochschule. Mehrfach in dieser Zeit war er auch Musikassistent bei den Bayreuther Festspielen. 1937-51 leitete er gleichzeitig das Institut für Musikwissenschaften an der Universität Tübingen. 1940 sollte er als Nachfolger Peter Raabes die Präsidentschaft der Reichsmusikkammer übernehmen, wurde aber von Goebbels als "etwas zu wissenschaftlich" abgelehnt. Nach 1945 setzte er seine Lehrtätigkeit in Tübingen fort und ging 1951 in den Ruhestand.
