Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Fine condition black boards with gold spine lettering, contained in a very good condition color illustrated dust jacket. The rear upper jacket spine edge has two pencil erasor-size chips and similar light wear at the lower rear jacket tip (see photographs). All pages are lightly to moderately browned around the perimeter but in otherwise fine unmarked etc condition. Includes Dedication; Introduction; General Bibliography, Map of Nostradamus' Europe; Genealogy of the House of France; Genealogy of the House of Habsburg in Germany and Spain; Index of Historical and Eminent Persons and much much more. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece of Nostradamus, double page map of Europe and various family trees (in part mentioned above). "Nostradamus' prophecies have aroused the intense and unflagging interest of millions of English-speaking men and women in the four centuries since they were first published. Yet, although they have inspired many books, the prophecies have never previously been presented in a complete and scholarly translation. The only translations of any kind of ALL Nostradamus' prophecies are contained in a superficial and careless work of 1672 and in an adaptation of it published in this country. Nostradamus and His Prophecies provides the long-overdue exhaustive translation. The complete original prophecies are printed in a definitive modern text based on word-by-word comparison of the earliest editions, with the English translation on facing pages. Notes below the text clarify doubtful wording, while in the extensive Commentary section the author indicates what Nostradamus probably had in mind or, where this is impossible to determine, at least the geographical and historical implications. The Commentary section also includes the most famous interpretations - and also the most infamous. To further assist the general reader in comprehending Nostradamus' prophecies, the Commentary section is preceded by a survey of the historical background of the prophecies and a chronology of significant dates with captions as readable as tabloid headlines - which they often resemble. For the benefit of the general reader, the Nostradamian enthusiast and the serious critic alike, the author provides a series of indexes, by far the most complete ever compiled, invaluable for comparing quatrains with similar geographical settings, similar proper names, similar themes and the like. This astonishingly comprehensive work, however, deals with considerably more than Nostradamus' prophecies alone. Other sections cover all possible aspects of Nostradamus: The "Biography of Nostradamus" provides the most complete one in English, possibly in any language.A personal letter, again with complete original text and full translation, demonstrates that Nostradamus could "talk plainly."; The complex bibliography of earliest editions of Nostradamus.a complete work in itself, exposes many misconceptions. The bibliography of Nostradamus' commentators and critics provides a history, often humorous, of four centuries of mixed adulation and abuse of the controversial prophet; Last, but far from least, in a section entitled "Background and Rules of the Game" the author seeks to answer the questions "How and why did Nostradamus do it?" - excerpt from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

Hardcover. Condition: Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. First Edition; First Printing. Map and chart, folding; b&w plates; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 823 pages; 1961 Exposition Press : : Nosbooks. HC/DJ 1st edition, 1st printing. Soundly bound in original gray cloth with title lettering in red to cover and spine. This copy has the Exposition Press imprint but has has Nosbooks publisher labels placed over the Exposition imprint on the title and copyright pages leaving the 1st printing notice exposed on the copyright page. Interestingly the dust jacket bears the Nosbooks imprint to the spine and flaps. Presumably Nosbooks (a short lived publisher associated with only several titles in the mid-60's) purchased remaining copies from Exposition and the right to futute publication - as it appears there were some copies printed with a Nosbooks printed imprint and copyright. Front blank endpage has been neatly removed (presumably to excise ownership) leaving a stub for integrity; stub has been taped down to the recto of the frontis plate. Binding a little shaken in the spine. Dust jacket is clean but with some moderate surface rubbing, some light chipping and a few short closed tears at edges. Prior owner's neat tape reinforcement to the blank reverse of the jacket along the rear spine fold and the tail of the spine panel. Illustrated with fold-out map and chart along with several B&W plates. G++/G++ or better . Oversize book may require additional charges for expedited or international shipping.
