Boards are a deep red in colour; spine has five raised bands with decorative motifs between each band, and gilt titles. Gilt page-edges. Silk endpapers. Boards are worn through to the four open corners and to part of rear open edge. Sporadic foxing but, apart from that to frontispiece, the engravings are unaffected. Crease to top-right of pages 207 and 209 as a result of the pages having been folded at some point of time. Title-page is dated 1886 with no mention of a later edition so is presumably a first edition. Text in French.

L'éducation physique occupe une grande partie de l'emploi du temps des célèbres officiers, l'équitation, la natation (sport inattendu au XVIIIe siècle), l'escrime ont autant d'importance qu'un cours d'arithmétique ou de latin. La charnière du deuxième plat est très fendue, avec un plat en voie de désolidarisation.
