Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The theme of this book is that human beings are better off when they add an "e" to human and become humane. To be humane is to avoid being cruel to others, and to act in ways that benefit not only ourselves, but other people too. The book is offered as a Christmas present to both religious and non-religious persons in the belief that all people can appreciate that Divinity becoming human is an idea that could spur humans toward better conduct if they sought the divine within themselves. Our scientific expertise has given us god-like powers. If we join this talent to the emotional talent of compassion and empathy we will be virtuous in the old sense of "skillful at living", and we will save both ourselves and our planet. For many years, education has been beset by myths - myths that it can't be fixed with new concepts, that it takes specialists to diagnose what's wrong, that research doesn't reflect the real world, that the lessons of business cannot be generalized to education. This book takes on these misunderstandings and shows precisely what educators may do in order to overcome them. Educators will find Salowe and Lessinger's advice to be a rational, sober, and research-based approach to an often-debated topic.

He is the son of emigrants from Russia who arrived in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Penniless and poor, they pulled themselves up the social scale by sheer effort and determination, taking advantage of America's opportunities that are open to all if one goes after them. Mostly self-educated, Leon's father Samuel, became first a pharmacist and then a physician. He wanted to give something back to the country that had allowed him to do this, and he always set apart some of his time to treat, without fee, the indigent poor. Leon, too, has always treasured what America can be, and has served it as a soldier in WWII, as a psychiatrist and an educationalist. He was for many years superintendent of schools in California, and wrote a book from that experience titled "Every Kid a Winner, convinced that personal attention to each child, and an education that fosters rather than forces, will indeed result in every child being a winner in the education system." In the twilight of his years, Leon fears that the America he and his father knew is disappearing, and that the optimistic surge toward personal and community betterment they both experienced is giving way to sour selfishness and unabashed hedonism to the disadvantage of the individuals themselves and of the communities they inhabit. He wishes his thoughts set down here to be a call to arms for people everywhere to regain our enthusiasm for life and its betterment. This item is printed on demand. Stories from East and West to Save the World is Leon Lessinger's tribute to his son Steve, who was an educator in Japan and died in that country at too early an age. It is the fruit of conversations Leon had with son, based on what Steve's wife, Naomi, had told Steve about Japan. Leon sees some parallels here with what he observed during his own career as an educator in the United States. He has been assisted in the formulation of his ideas by Brian Redmond, a retired teacher of English to Japanese people. Leon, Brian and Naomi are all convinced that education is not a matter if stuffing facts into a person as letters into a mail box, but is a precious chance to give guidance and courage to those seeking knowledge, and thus shape a better world for all.
