Hardcover. Condition: Good. In Hebrew. (4), xvi, 162, (2) pages. 175 x 125 mm. Neue durchgesehene und vermehrte Auflage [= a thoroughly reviewed and expanded edition]. This is a Tel Aviv University reprint of the edition published by Jacob Schlossberg in Vienna in 1860. The book has all the poems in Letteris' first two books (1823 and 1824), as well as new poems and Hebrew adaptations of German poems. The Preface, with its biographical notes is by the publisher, Jacob Schlossberg, of the 1860 edition. Letteris was an Austrian Jewish poet, scholar and literary critic. As the bookplate on the front endpaper indicates, this copy was donated by Professor Michael Arfa to the now defunct Hevesi Library. Professor Michael (Milton) Arfa was a distinguished Rabbi, author and professor of Hebrew literature and philosophy. Dr. Arfa taught generations of students at Yeshiva University, Herzliah Hebrew Teachers Institute, Hunter College, HUC-JIR and NYU. As chairman of the Israel Matz Foundation, Dr. Arfa devoted himself to aiding indigent Hebrew writers, and published scholarly works of Hebrew literature and philosophy. He was a gifted teacher, humanitarian, scholar, lover of Zion and above all a modest and quiet doer of good deeds. He died in 2003.
