CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The author was a corporal in Troop E, First Rhode Island Cavalry Regiment during the U.S. Civil War. He was captured by the Confederates on June 17, 1863 at Middlebrook, Virginia and exchanged about 5 weeks later. Captured again at Warrenton, Virginia in October 1863, he spent an additional 19 months in captivity at several prisons, including Belle Island, Andersonville, and Savanah. Here is his personal experience, including what he calls "barbarous" treatment and the purposeful infliction of cruelty by the Confederates. REFERENCE: DORN RI 68.
