An interesting original Texas Republic-era document from St. Augustine, Texas, concerning a writ of garnishment filed by Levi M. Crow, against a group of debtors. Levi M. Crow (1815-1854) was an interesting figure in early Texas. He is buried with his wife in the Crow family cemetery in San Augustino County, where their tombstone reads: Levi and Mary were born in Tenn, he acquired land in San Austine Co. Texas, 1835, and was elected constable there the same year. He served in Sam Houston's army in 1836 and in the Texas Mounted Volunteers against Indians in 1838. Elected Justice of the Peace in 1850, he died from a rattlesnake bite in 1854. St. Augustine, Texas, was founded in 1834 and is one of the oldest towns in the state. Located in eastern Texas, it was a significant settlement during the Texas Republic period from 1836 to 1845. During this time, St. Augustine contributed to the political and social development of the region. The town is known for its historic buildings and landmarks, reflecting its place in Texas history. The text of the document reads as follows: The Republic of Texas in the name and by the authority of the same. To the Sheriff of San Augustino County -- Greeting. Whereas Levi M. Crow hath filed his petition under Oath praying for this writ of Garnishment to issue against ______ McKinney, B.W. McCarvy, Rhoderick Anthony, Nicholas H. Darnell, Bernard Reilly, Philip A. Patterson or what effects of his they have in their hands &c. These are therefore to Command you Summon the said defendants above named to appear at the next term of the district Court to be holden at the Court House in the Town of San Augustine on the fourth Monday in September next, and that they and each of them answer upon Oath what they are indebted to John G. Patterson or what effects they have in their hand belonging to the said Patterson or so much thereof as shall as shall be sufficient to satisfy the judgement of Thomas Quizenbury [Quisenberry?] who was to the use of Levi M. Crow against John G. Patterson for the sum of Eighty five dollars debt besides Interest and Cost of Suit. And you are hereby commanded to send John G. Patterson with a copy of said petition filed in this suit. Herein fail not and make due return of this writ - Witness J. B. Johnson, Clerk of the District Court, this the 14 day of August AD 1843. Given under my hand and seal of the Court. J. B. Johnson CDC Rarity Original documents dating from the Republic of Texas are rare in the market. Map.
