Rarissima edizione originale di questo lavoro di Simeone Levi che rileva nell'introduzione come nessun egittologo si sia fino a quel momento sobbarcato "l…'immane fatica" della compilazione di queste tavole. L'A. fece ricerche sui papiri di Parigi, Berlino, Londra, Leida e Bulaq, procedendo anche a confronti con le trascrizioni e le traduzioni di noti egittologi (Champollion, Pleyte) "dimostrando chiaramente che il lavoro fu intrapreso e continuato con rara energia e costanza di proposito. Osserveremo soltanto che lo studio de' segni dell'antico e medio Impero manca pressoche' interamente, ed e' invece assai compiuto la parte che riguarda il nuovo Impero e i testi funerarii del periodo saitico e tolemaico" (cfr. La Civilta' Cattolica, 1886, p. 591). Simeone Levi, egittologo, nacque a Carmagnola nel 1843 e mori' nel 1913. Si laureo' in matematica a Pisa. Accostatosi all'egittologia nel 1876 - quando gia' conosceva bene ebraico, greco, latino e lingue orientali come il sanscrito, nonche' le principali lingue europee - vi si dedico' con crescente passione. La sua opera piu' nota e' il monumentale "Vocabolario Geroglifico Copto Ebraico", in 8 volumi, stampato in sole 200 copie tra il 1887 e il 1894. Semiparalizzato da una malattia infantile, di notorieta' europea, fu antagonista di Schiaparelli, rimanendo un outsider del mondo accademicoa causa della sua malattia (come egli stesso ebbe a dire). Manterra' sino alla morte la passione per quell'Egitto tanto strettamente legato alla storia dell'ebraismo, un universo sconfinato nel quale si addentra forte di una strabiliante conoscenza delle lingue moderne ma soprattutto antiche (dara' il suo contributo anche al Museo Egizio di Torino).
