Haase. - Name of the author handwritten on the cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: The aim of this paper is to suggest that Claudius' historical studies were both less and more than the preoccupation of a man who preferred literature to politics and study to power. I shall argue that they were less because both the content of some of Claudius historical work and his early life, in which he made efforts to enter politics, and in which for a short period he may have seemed a possible candidate for advancement to imperial power, show him by no means uninterested in contemporary events; more, because in those historical works he had leisure to develop his own theory of what the Principate should be. I shall go on to argue that not only Claudius conduct as Princeps but his attitude towards his predecessors, including Augustus, indicates that the true model for his Principate was the domination of Julius Caesar; and that his emulation of the Dictator arose alike from his historical studies, from his treatment by Caesars successors in power, and from the manner of his own accession to the Principate. - Wikipedia: Barbara M. Bearing the same name, and both the wives of rulers, these women shed valuable light on the role of imperial women in in what is often considered the golden age of the Roman Empire. Barbara Levick's Faustina I and II highlights the importance of these women to the internal politics of the Empire during this period and shows how they are links in a chain of elite Roman women for whom varying levels of recognition and even power were available. The Faustinae, as they are jointly called, come between the discreet Matidiae, the discreetly manipulative Plotina (Trajan's women), the philosophical Sabina (Hadrian's wife) and in the Severan dynasty Julia Domna, who has had a very high profile. In assessing their place in this chain, Levick will examine especially Faustina II's deep involvement in palace politics, her enhancement of her mother's position, and her possible role in the revolt of Avidius Cassius (175).
