Verfasser mehrerer einschlägiger botanischer Werke in Florenz. - Der Geograph und Generalmajor Karl Sonklar von Innstädten (1816-85) zählt neben Friedrich von Simony und Anton von Ruthner zu den Pionieren der Alpenerforschung; als geographischer Schriftsteller hat Sonklar "durch gründliche und vielseitige Beobachtungen über Gletscher, hydrographische, meteorologische und biogeographische Erscheinungen, besonders die Höhengrenzen, die er seinen wissenschaftlichen Beschreibungen beschränkterer Gebiete der Alpen einverleibte, wissenschaftliches Material von Werth dargeboten und zugleich die Methode der Länderbeschreibung geklärt" (ADB). Neben militärwissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen in den Bereichen der Taktik und Kriegsgeschichte veröffentlichte er auch ein kunstwissenschaftliches Werk, das nach dem wohlwollenden Urteil der Zeitgenossen "in keiner Anstalt, in welcher über Kunst vorgetragen wird, fehlen" dürfe (Wurzbach). - Aus der berühmten Autographensammlung des Adalbert Freiherr von Lanna (1836-1909).
