piena pergamena. Condition: Good. in-8 (164x100 mm), , ff. 64, carattere corsivo, testo su 30 linee con spazi per lettere guida, ancora aldina al frontespizio e in fine. Legatura in piena pergamena posteriore. -- Edizione rara, solo 6 copie censite in Opac Sbn. in 4°, bella legatura moderna in piena pelle, nervi e titoli oro al dorso, dentelle d'oro, tagli marmorizzati, cc. Prima edizione. "4to (206x142 mm.), solid 18th cent. stiff vellum, with a floral tool in gold, sprinkled edges, a good copy with capital letters supplied by an almost contemporary hand in red and blue, some rubrication in red, two illuminated initials faded with marginal extension with gold dots preserved (the first leaves possibly delicately washed at an early date). Printed in roman type, ff. 6 nn., 100 numb., 2 nn. (last orig. blank present, with a repair to lower corner). First edition, very rare, dedicated to Isabella d'Este (1474-1539), Marquess of Mantova and wife of Federico II Gonzaga, one of the most authoritative women of the Renaissance and of the Italian cultural world of her time, a patron of the arts portrayed by Leonardo and Titian - as well as a leader in fashion, whose innovative style of dress was copied by numerous noblewomen. The 'Selvette', a prose work with poetic interludes by the Venetian scholar Niccolò Liburnio (1474-1557), canon of the Basilica of San Marco, are placed in the context of the classic opposition between the old and the new vernacular literature, in front of which Liburnio, still recognizing the importance of the ancient 'fathers' of the language (Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio) leans towards a decisive affirmation of the authority of the moderns (Antonio Tebaldeo, Iacopo Sannazzaro, Pietro Bembo). Parenti, p. 312; BMC STC It. p. 377; not in Adams; Brunet III, 1068; Graesse IV, 202. Apparently, no copy listed at auction on RBH in last 30 years.".

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover, 1554 Paris edition. Condition is very good. 19th century full leather binding, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Paginates by leaves (1 leaf=2 pages): 127, plus 1 leaf index. 2 blanks front and back look like they are from the old rebind. Title page and last page of index are pages with the most wear: title page has old ownership stamp, and a few stains. All other pages are near fine or fine. Paper is excellent quality: supple, lightly toned, not fragile. Binding is sound. Front blank endpaper has two inscriptions in Spanish. One is dated April 23, 1880. The other is earlier and signed by Alfredo Chavero (same as ownership stamp). Chavero was a prominent Mexican archeologist, historian, politician and writer. No other writing or markings. Which could be translated as The three fountains of master Nicolo Liburnio, in three volumes, following the grammar and eloquence of Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio. First edition of this important work, which represents the first history of Italian linguistic tradition. In Le tre the humanist Liburnio illustrates the language and syntax employed by the three Crowns, i.e. Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarca, and Giovanni Boccaccio, contrasting the linguistic reform proposed by Gian Giorgio Trissino. The first Book contains the well-known Difesa di Dante. These three great authors (the three fountains, or sources of eloquence) are used as models, in keeping with the position expressed by the lexicographer in one of his previous works.
