Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First American Edition (SD). Scandinavian Classics Volume XIV. 'This series of Scandinavian Classics is published by The American-Scandinavian Foundation in the belief that greater familiarity with the chief literary monuments of the North will help Americans to a better understanding of Scandinavians, and thus serve to stimulate their sympathetic cooperation to good ends.' As you can see from the photos, the maroon covers are in very nice condition. They are very clean. The gilt design on the front cover is very bright. The gilt lettering on the spine is also very bright. The edges and corners of the covers are in excellent condition. I don't see any rubbing. The bottom edge of the spine has a thin wrinkle. The top page edge is gilt. It looks very good. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. They did a pretty good job, a few of the middle edges of early pages are a little jagged with slight losses. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. There are no binding issues. The pages are exceptionally clean. I've scrolled through them several times without finding any instances of soiling. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. There are no markings. No attachments. There is a neatly signed name (Astrid Lier) off the top edge of the blank front end paper. There is no other writing of any kind to be found anywhere in the book. 'Among Lie's finest works must be considered Familien paa Gilje (1883) which was a striking document of the life of an officer's family, and the few options given to the daughters of such families.' In 1904, the King of Norway awarded Lie the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Olav.
