Photograph
Vintage studio still photograph from a television re-release of the 1943 film, seen here under the alternate title "Armored Attack!" The titular Ukrainian village of North Star is confronted with the realities of war when the Germans invade. A film deemed subversive by the House Committee on Un-American Activities due to the sympathetic portrayal of Russian peasants and guerillas as they fought the Nazis. Nominated for six Academy Awards. 10 x 8 inches. Near Fine.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: good. Later printing (?). Octavo, 170pp., illustrated. No printing statement, which typically indicates a later printing, per Random House's contemporary style. A superb copy, SIGNED by Hellman and director Shumlin on the verso of the dedication page (Hellman dedicated the book to Shumlin), and also SIGNED by the entire Broadway cast on the following leaf. Each of the actors has signed their name in the space between the actor's name and their respective role. Among the actors are Anne Blyth and Paul Lukas. This copy also bears a 5" x 7" photograph of a scene in the play, pasted to the front paste-down. On the opposite flyleaf, the actress Lycile Watson (who plays Fanny Farrelly) has written: "'I love a good potato pancake!' To my beloved Zelma, with Lucile's love." Droplet stains to the top edge, and there are a few inexplicable defects to the book - evidence of bookplate removal to the half-title page, a large and amateur paper repair to the dedication leaf, two corner clips excised (about 2" x 2") from pp. 167 and 169, which affect just a few words of text, and the outer half of pp. 11-12 replaced with that part of the same leaf from another copy, re-attached with glue. All of these defects rather bizarre and inexplicable, and rendering the condition as merely "good," despite its owtherwise crisp, clean state. In a good dust jacket, with several medium chips. The pervious owner has also annotated the rear jacket flap with some personal notes. With all defects, still a marvelous example.
