Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. First Edition. 12mo, 309 pages, cloth; dj torn cleanly Inscribed by the Author to her friend, Betty Johnston, of Geneva, Illinois, where Budd moved in 1940, and which town is largely the locale of this novel, the last in her trilogy. "Athough she is nearly forgotten in the Swedish-American community today, Lillian Budd was once one of the most popular authors Swedish America ever produced. Beginning with April Snow (1951) and continuing through two additional novels, Land of Strangers (1953) and April Harvest (1959), Budd presented the story of a single Swedish-American family emigrating to the Chicago area at the turn of the twentieth century. Much as Vilhelm Moberg did in The Emigrants , Budd attempted to give a sense of the broad sweep of the emigrant experience, following the family of Karl Mattias Petersson from Sweden to the New World and into an American-born generation. Indeed, one of Budd's press releases called her "USA' s Vilhelm Moberg". - Carl Isaacson.

SIGNED by Author on ffep. Previous owner - Lois Anderson's signature and stamped letter from Author Lillian Budd included with book that is also SIGNED. Land of Strangers by Lillian Budd is a historical fiction novel, first published in 1953, that details the life of a Swedish immigrant family in America during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is the second book in her acclaimed April Snow trilogy. Amazon Synopsis: The novel follows the journey of Karl Mattias Petersson (who becomes Carl Matthew Christianson upon immigration) as he leaves his home in Sweden to find a new life in America, first in New York and then settling in the Chicago area. The story explores the challenges and experiences of an immigrant family dealing with a new culture, language, and economic hardship in the late 1890s. Goodreads Plot points: Carl meets and marries Elin Nilsson (Ellen Anderson in America), whom he knew in Sweden. The couple struggles with poverty, and Elin eventually contracts tuberculosis after taking on strenuous work as a laundress. The book explores themes of assimilation, cultural identity, the "melting pot" of American society, and the specific difficulties faced by newcomers. Part of a Trilogy: Land of Strangers is preceded by April Snow (1951), which is set in Sweden, and followed by April Harvest (1959), which focuses on the American-born daughter, Sigrid. The New York Times Detail and Realism: Reviewers praise the book for its "abundance of homely detail" about life in humble Swedish homes and the "uprooting experience of emigrating," providing a down-to-earth realism about the immigrant experience. Character Dislike: One reviewer found the main character, Carl, to be "whiny, self-absorbed and indecisive" and difficult to like, despite his generosity toward strangers. Historical Value: While considered somewhat dated by modern literary standards, the book is valued for preserving a "valuable piece of the history of Swedish America" from a mid-20th-century perspective. Themes: Key themes include the celebration of the European American "cultural triumph" and the idea of America as a melting pot, alongside the persistent idea of Swedish traits like a strong work ethic, honesty, and cleanliness.
