Cypraeovula fuscorubra elsorum n. ssp. in the Danger Point area on the Cape Overberg region coast differs from the nominate C. fuscorubra fuscorubra (Shaw 1909) which is confined to the Cape Peninsula west coast. The shell of fuscorubra elsorum is generally smaller, has longer extending riblets of the columellar teeth, less developed marginal and ventral callosities, and a more exposed spire. Analysis of the fuscorubra elsorum COI gene shows considerable differences to its western sister, C. fuscorubra fuscorubra. A 95 km long coastal distribution gap separates the known distribution of both subspecies. C. fuscorubra elsorum is also compared to C. fuscodentata grohorum Lorenz 2002 occupying the apparent range interval. Lorenz (2002, 2017, 2018) applied the name 'gondwanalandensis Burgess 1970' to the new subspecies and this oversight is corrected herein. New taxon: Cypraeovula fuscorubra elsorum n. ssp. 10 pp., 2 figs, 1 tab., 2 color plates, 4.

This field guide is a comprehensive update of Terrence Gosliner's "Nudibarnchs of Southern Africa". It covers all of 868 species of sea slugs known from the region, as documented by a dedicated group of researchers and naturalists. The stunning beauty of sea slugs is captured in photographs and illustrations that identify the species, their known variants and their egg ribbons. The text gives details of size, distribution, external anatomy, identifying characteristics and natural history. Cape Town. The Cape Orchids is regional monograph in two volumes that encapsulates a comprehensive overview of what is currently known about the classification and ecology of all 241 orchid species, both terrestrial and epiphytic, of the 24 genera native to the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa. An area of prodigious biodiversity, this region has been declared a World Heritage Site and is recognised as one of the top International Biodiversity Hotspots. The publication of this work comes at an opportune time for global conservation awareness. Habitat destruction has severely reduced populations of many orchid species, so that it is poignant to note that these volumes could offer a 'final look' at a number of highly endangered or virtually extinct species. Orchids are one of the most treasured elements of the Cape flora and this book is intended as a fitting tribute to their magnificence. As the majority of Cape orchids are fire-dependent and many remain dormant for long periods, some spectacular species will rarely be seen in flower. Significant aspects of their natural history, biology and distribution have thus, until recently, remained poorly documented. The Cape Orchids forms a scientifically important archival record, combining the literature of nearly four centuries with contributions from many well-known botanical authorities of today, making it an indispensable reference work. With a strong focus on natural history, photographic imagery and botanical art, it presents a living herbarium of these fascinating plants. The authors' holistic approach extends well beyond the traditional treatment of taxonomy and plant descriptions to cover a wider spectrum, encompassing biological, ecological and evolutionary aspects. Please note: due to the size and fine-art paper used, this set weighs in at 7.25 kg. Cape Town. Sandstone Editions. 1022 pp., 2000+ color photos, b/w photos, color illustrations, color maps, 2 Vols, hardvover 4 [in solid slip case].
