Add to basketFirst edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author of one of the introductory essays on the front free endpaper, "Sir Donald Gallup, Thought of as one but actually three. With much gratitude and love from his much obliged Carl. June 24, 1956, New York." Carl Van Vechten's "A Chat About Chinese Food and a Chinese Cook" (pp. xv-xix) describes his long association with Lin Tsuifeng, her husband Lin Yutang, and their children, including their youngest daughter, Lin Hsiangju (also known as Mei-Mei). "It is indubitably true that cooking and eating come very near the top of my special addictions. If you have never eaten one of Hong's [Lin Tsuifeng's] delicious dinners (and how could you have?), you scarcely know the meaning of Chinese food, certainly not its deeper subtleties. Mei-Mei is a young lady who mixes an excellent cocktail (but does not drink it) when her mother gives a dinner" (pp. xv-xviii). The curator of American literature at Yale for three decades, Gallup acted as the executor of Van Vechten's literary estate following his death in 1964. Octavo. Vignettes in text by Siu Lan Loh. Original patterned boards, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in red, top edge red. With dust jacket designed by Jeanyee Wong. Spine ends bumped; jacket unclipped, spine sunned, a few nicks and bumps: a fine copy in near-fine jacket.
