Mehr hat er nicht hinterlassen, ein überaus rares, aber auch intensives, beeindruckendes und überzeugendes Werk, dessen Aufarbeitung lange noch nicht abgeschlossen ist und dessen angemessene Würdigung im Blick auf seinen kunstgeschichtlichen Stellenwert noch aussteht. Jean-Pierre Velly, der mit nur 46 Jahren 1990 in seiner Wahlheimat Italien auf so tragische wie mysteriöse Weise ums Leben kam, ist gleichwohl bereits jetzt als einer der bedeutendsten Visionäre in der Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts anzusehen. Er war nicht nur ein eminenter Grafiker, sondern auch Zeichner, der in seinem altmeisterlich beherrschten Können, seiner Formauffassung, bildnerischen Virtuosität und Wahrhaftigkeit unmittelbar an die ganz großen der Vergangenheit, speziell der Renaissance und des Manierismus, anschließt. Dürers Schaffen war ihm sicher ebenso vertraut wie die Hochleistungen der italienischen und französischen Schule oder die Grafik jener Zeit. Seine überaus einfühlsamen Stillleben und Landschaften, die sichtlich von bedrängender Melancholie und Transzendenz durchdrungen sind, offenbaren wiederum deutliche Bezüge zur nordischen Romantik eines Caspar David Friedrich. Die Lichträume eines Turner oder Lorrain sind vorgetragen mit der Präzision eines Peintre-graveurs, der den Stichel und die Radiernadel perfekt zu handhaben weiß. Doch bei aller Rückbesinnung auf die »Alten« schuf Velly ein sehr zeitgemäßes, ja modernes uvre, das Elemente einer ganz eigenen subjektiv-existentialistischen Seinsauffassung bruchlos mit der gesteigerten Empfindsamkeit einer unmittelbaren Naturanschauung verbindet, die sich zu komplexen Sinnbildern des Seins verdichtet. Realität und Traumwelt, Diesseits und Jenseits, Zeit und Ewigkeit bestimmen die Pole, zwischen denen sich das Werk des Künstlers in seiner Determination zum Tod hin entfaltet.
