He worked in SA until he left for self-imposed exile in Paris in 1947. In 1939 a picture by him was bought by the Johannesburg Art Gallery and was the first piece by a "black" a…rtist to be hung in South Africa. He left for Paris in 1947 and died in 1993 before the end of apartheid. This volume tracing his work was published in 1988 and it was intended to open people's eyes to the work of indigenous artists. Dust jacket is bumped on edges and corners and has a small area of material missing from the front. Free front end paper has been cleanly, but crookedly excised.
