Soft cover. Condition: New. A Perennial Bestseller on Townsfolk Life As Amazing Tales-First Series by Ling Mengchu (l580-l644) made a hit, the publisher urged him to write a sequel to it. This gave rise to Amazing Tales-Second Series, which has become another bestseller for the last few centuries. Our English version of the Second Series features 19 stories carefully chosen from the original 40. In fascinating plots and a highly expressive colloquial language, they are mostly about women's fate, their miserable existence in a polygamous society, their daring struggle for genuine love, and their implications in legal cases. All these shed precious light on the social mosaic of seventeenth-century China.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. A fascinating collection of traditional Chinese short stories, 'Amazing Tales Second Series' by Ling Mengchu compiles 40 pieces from various sources, masterfully refined and polished by the author. Known in Chinese as 'Er Pai', these two collections offer a sharp and strong sense of social criticism, setting their attack against the social evils and malpractices prevalent during the Ming Dynasty, reflecting the customs of the time. Many stories advocate for concepts such as equality between men and women in love and marriage, while others depict the commercial activities of Ming Dynasty townspeople from a positive viewpoint, highlighting their desire for profit and wealth accumulation. The narratives are characterized by simple, natural language and a lively, moving style. This edition is presented as a Hardcover in Good condition.

First Edition Signed
Softcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition (softcover issue). [as-new, unblemished copy]. Trade PB (woodcut illustrations) SIGNED by translator Chen Chen on the half-title page. This collection of ten newly-translated 17th Century tales is "a long overdue contribution to the treasury of translated Chinese literature" (from the Introduction). In her Preface, co-translator Chen Chen discusses how she came to be familiar with these stories -- first, in her teens in China, in editions that were censored for their sexual content; and then later in life, returning to them after settling in the United States. She describes the approach taken by her and her collaborator in making the selection for this volume, including re-reading "all two hundred [original] tales several times to gauge their respective merit and value," and praises the stories as "fascinating tales about merchants, scholars, housewives, magistrates, craftsmen, courtesans, abbots, nuns, and even children, spanning a broad spectrum of Chinese urban and rural life." A companion volume containing stories by another writer, Feng Menglong, "The Oil Vendor and the Courtesan," was issued in 2007. Signed by Translator.
