Signed and inscribed by the Author. Octavo, blue boards (hardcover), gilt letters, photo. illus. endpapers, xiii, 252 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket: The River Murray is Australia's most significant waterway. The story of its environment, and the people who lived within its sphere, is of fundamental importance to our understanding of the settlement and development of Australia. Mannum, a town and district on the lower reaches of the Murray in South Australia, has had an important part in that larger story. There, from "The Dreaming," lived Aboriginal people of great antiquity, whose view of the natural world was centred on the river. Then came European exploration and settlement. The first wave of explorers coincided with the spread of diseases, of European origin, which decimated the Aboriginal population and destroyed their way of life. Subsequent settlement continued this pattern. The Europeans, though, were at first content to graze their flocks and herds around the river's mighty flow. Before two decades of European occupation had ended, there was an evident desire to go further and to make the river a great highway for transport. Mannum was central to this quest. William Richard Randell, pioneer of Murray navigation, had his base there and it was not long before the settlement became a notable port. Within another twenty years, the town was an important manufacturing and milling cetnre as well as a shipping hub. In the meantime, agricultural settlement had spread to Mannum's hinterland -- small villages, schools, and communities were created. As the people worked the land, they discovered that the environment was not as friendly as supposed. Farming, and life, was a battle. The story of Mannum's growth into the modern era, is a mirror of the Australian experience. Many of the forces that were played out were, here, seen most clearly: environmental challenges; the thrust of tourism; the continually altering demands of labour and manufacturing; the huge impact of new forms of transport; and the highs and lows of economic life. South Pacific, Australia, Australian History, Mannum. nslic.
