23.5x15cm. First edition. An amusing look at the problems of adolescence. pp30(2) with two monochrome photo portraits as frontispiece, comic line illustrations at title-page and in text, and spoof bibliography. Original white paper-covered boards backed in blue cloth, illustrated front board titled etc in black. Small triangular section at lower outer corner of front board discoloured, the result of competent but amateurish repair to quite severe bump (only slightly affecting corresponding corners of contents); board appearance not too adversely affected. Lower outer corner of rear board slightly rubbed & bumped. Contents clean, tight and very good. GOOD copy in FAIR unclipped dust jacket largely intact, but lightly toned, lightly but quite densely spotted over lower section and fore-edge area of front panel, a little marked at rear panel, chipped with a little loss - particularly along jagged tear of length 9.5cm along spine fold - and with a few nicks and short closed tears.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Book condition near fine. Hard cover. 1st edition. Text body clean. Spine intact. Book boards clean front and back. Book block clean. Over-all a great and neat copy. The New England region is one of the most interesting and distinctive parts of NSW. Knowledge of the early occupation of the area has been considerably enhanced by the work of photographers, amateur and professional, who penetrated the area in the 1860's and amassed a wealth of pictorial material. New England from Old Photographs is a selection of this irreplaceable legacy left by camera in the bush, and is the first titled in John Ferguson's Old Photographs Series to cover a country region. There have been several 'New Englands' ranging from the huge vaguely defined and unsurveyed area placed under the care of a single Commissioner of Crown Land 1839, to the clearly delineated area of 98,000 Square Kilometres recognized by the NSW Department of Urban and Regional Development in 1973. Lionel Gilbert, historian and resident of the area, has selected the photographs to include the variety of landforms and townships, people and occupations in New England from 18602 to 1960 - Aborigines, squatters , miners, selectors, towns people - how they lived, worked and enjoyed themeselves. Special effort has been made to identify the photographers for its through their quick wittedness, artistic flair and technical competence that the fascinating glimpses of the count life been preserved. Plenty of photos and text in the book.
