Knowledge of the early occupation of the area has been considerably enhanced by the work of photographers, amateur and professional, who penetrated the area in the 1860's and amassed a wealth of pictorial material. New England from Old Photographs is a selection of this irreplaceable legacy left by camera in the bush, and is the first titled in John Ferguson's Old Photographs Series to cover a country region. There have been several 'New Englands' ranging from the huge vaguely defined and unsurveyed area placed under the care of a single Commissioner of Crown Land 1839, to the clearly delineated area of 98,000 Square Kilometres recognized by the NSW Department of Urban and Regional Development in 1973. Lionel Gilbert, historian and resident of the area, has selected the photographs to include the variety of landforms and townships, people and occupations in New England from 18602 to 1960 - Aborigines, squatters , miners, selectors, towns people - how they lived, worked and enjoyed themeselves.
