Rare édition abrégée de l'un des principaux écrits du prélat italien Aloisio Lippomani (c.1500-1559) qui acquit une grande réputation par "sa vaste érudition et sa remarquable aptitude pour les affaires" (Larousse). Ce vaste panorama de l'histoire des saint, dont la version complète fut publiée à Rome de 1551 à 1560 en 6 volumes in-4, contient de nombreux détails sur les martyrs et sur les "sectes des hérésies". "Ouvrage où l'on trouve plus de critique qu'on n'en rencontre d'ordinaire, et où l'auteur a conservé une foule d'anecdotes précieuses tirées des Grecs et des Latins" (César Cantu, "Les Hérétiques d'Italie").
