Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Paul, Ray - Cover Design (illustrator). First Edition. 138 Pages Indexed. Light wear to front cover. No other defects noted and the interior text pages are near flawless. In 1970, 3,160 acres of the Pagosa district of the San Juan National Forest were set aside as the Chimney Rock Archeological Area, making it the largest high-mountain archaeological zone in the national forest system. It is situated within the boundaries of the Southern Ute Indian Reservation and is a special precinct to these Native Americans. Also in 1970, a 960-acre block of land containing the greatest concentration of prehistoric remains in the national forest system was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Subsequently, an intensive National Park Service/University of New Mexico research project in Chaco Canyon National Monument underscored the connection of the major Chimney Rock site to a pan-San Juan Basin Chacoan system, and legislation was put before Congress to add the Chimney Rock Archeological Area to the Chaco Archeological Protection Site System. These various designations are part of long-term programs to protect the antiquities and make them available to the public through development of visitor facilities and understandable through interpretive materials. The southern base of the pinnacles of Companion and Chimney rocks has the added value of being an aerie of peregrine falcons. These birds of prey typically nest at the top of high talus slopes having ledges with gravel or soil into which depressions for eggs can be scraped. The protection of this endangered species and its habitat is a second mission incorporated into the area's management. This publication necessarily goes beyond the territory immediately surrounding Chimney Rock in order to establish the cultural back- ground from which the local expression evolved and to carry interpretation through to modem historic occupations. Two thousand years of human history are represented.

Twenty four issues, complete of these early two volumes, rare so. Amongst the important articles in these issues are the first description of an effective steam pump: An Account of Mr Savery s Engine, for raising water by the help of fire (issue 253). They contain also amongst many others a dissection of the American opossum from Virginia by Tyson (issue 239), a method of extracting the root of an infinite Equation by Moivre (issue 240) a description of a triple rainbow by Halley (issue 240), observations on Giants Causeway (issue 241), some thoughts on vegetation by John Woodward (issue 244), a description of Loch Ness, explaining how deep it is [but, alas, no mention of the monster] (issue 254), correspondence between Wallis and Leibnitz (issue 255), a discourse on coffee by John Houghton (issue 256), A calculation of the credibility of human testimony (issue 257), on the discovery of the bulbourethral glands by Cowper (also known as Cowpers glands), and also a letter by Benjamin Woodroose concerning several observations in Maryland (issue 259). They also contain an objection to Leeuwenhoek s assertion on the generative properties of male semen by Dr Lister (issue 244), and Leeuwenhoek s reply (in issue 255), in which there are two articles from him: i) containing his answers to objections made to his opinions, and ii) concerning the Animalcula in Semine humano, in which he argues from his own experimental researches that the shape of sperm does not resemble a homunculus. This letter has a good claim to be the first serious scientific article on human developmental biology, posing as it does (goaded by the objection to his work), the question of how a fully formed animal shape can emerge from a sperm that bears no outward resemblance to its final developed form.
