Hardcover. Condition: Used - Very Good. Tuscany is known throughout the world as the capital of Renaissance art -- the site of the renowned Uffizi Gallery and the Galleria dell'Accademia, home to Michelangelo's David. The artistic heritage of the region is far more diverse, however, than many people realize. Artistic influences are not limited to the Renaissance style; masters of the Mannerist and Baroque styles lived and worked in Tuscany, too, and their legacy is evident throughout the region.Hidden Tuscany brings readers beyond the most well-known Tuscan sites to hidden gems off the beaten path -- to country churches, ornate villas, and garden grottos. Sites featured include the church of Santa Felicita, decorated by Mannerist master Pontormo; Villa Napoleone-Demidoff on Elba, where Napoleon resided during his exile; the Silk Factory of Florence; and the elaborate seventeenth-century garden at Castello di Gricigliano, also in Florence. With gorgeous color photography and insightful text, Hidden Tuscany uncovers these and other wonders of the region. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks.

This is how Monique Lévi-Strauss, wife of the famous anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss, begins the extraordinary account of an adventure that began thirty years ago, when cashmere shawls cost very little and no longer aroused the passion that they had inspired among nineteenth-century ladies. It was at the end of the eighteenth century that English ladies first discovered the exotic shawls from Kashmir. The trend reached France with the return of Napoleon's soldiers from the Egyptian campaign. It spread rapidly: French women found that nothing was better suited to the new, classically inspired fashions of the time than these glamorous shawls. In 1809 the Empress Josephine was painted wearing a dress made from a white cashmere shawl, and Napoleon gave seventeen cashmere shawls as wedding presents to his second wife, Marie-Louise of Austria. Despite their costliness, the shawls were wildly sought after. The demand soon outstripped the supply, and the weavers of Kashmir had to change their production methods in order to increase output. Textile manufacturers in France and also in Britain sought to copy the Kashmiri designs but envisaged a technique more in keeping with European tradition?it took two Kashmiri men up to three years to weave a single precious shawl, using an incredible phantasmagoria of colors. As European manufacturers continued to vie with one another in "counterfeiting" Kashmir shawls, a flourishing industry developed, encouraged by the invention in France of the Jacquard loom. By 1840, European fashion was influencing shawl design in Kashmir, and among Europeans the French designs were the most popular. Eventually shawls became available in a wide range of prices, reflecting the quality of their decoration and of the raw materials from which they were made, including the number of different colors that had been used for the weft. Monique Lévi-Strauss has examined the evolution of French shawls from 1800 to 1880, identifying and classifying them in a comprehensive manner for the first time.
