Green boards with gilt decorations front and spine, gilt titles on spine. Colour illustrated endpapers. Top edge sprayed brown. Boards very slightly pushed at spine ends, hint of spotting on fore edge, else volume is neat, clean, bright and tight throughout. Housed in its slipcase, shelf worn, rubbed on corners, with a little cracking in paper along edges.

Paperback . Condition: Fair to Good. Panther Book No. 711. Pp l60. front cover creased to upper corner and cup ring apparent but this is a tight, sound copy. Contents evenly and lightly age-toned but clear and clean with no previous names, markings etc.

Over 3 journeys in the 1600s Lithgow travelled through most of Europe, the Middle East and Holy Land, North Africa (including Morocco, Egypt and Libya). A shotened account of his first 'peregrination' was published in 1614, and a selection of his travels were published in Hakluyts Posthumus of 1625. Not until 1632 was the first full version published. As well as fascinating accounts of travel he tells of his capture and torment by the Spanish at Malaga under the Inquisition. Size: 8vo.

Overall, overall both volumes are very good. John Critchley Prince ( 1808 - 1860 ) was born in Wigan, Lancashire, the son of a reed - maker for weavers. He received little formal education other than that at a local Baptist Sunday - school where learned to read and write. In his young life he suffered many privations and much tedium as he helped his father as a reed - maker. They were a poor family and John had to travel where was available at Manchester and Hyde. Solace was gained from the few poetry and story books he managed to procure. 1830 saw him travel to France and Germany to find work, he returned home without finding work only to discover his house had been burgled and his wife and familly in the Wigan poor house. In 1827 he began to write poetry and his life prospered - temporarily. His first book of poetry ' Hours With the Muses ', was published in 1841 and went into six editions. He published another five volumes of poetry. He went on to be one , if not the founder member of the Manchester Poets, who met at The Sun Inn, on Long Mlllgate. The other members included , among others, the poets Charles Swain, John Bolton Rogerson, Elijah Ridings, and Robert Rose.
