Réunion de deux rares éditions originales sur l'histoire des Lombards et de l'Empire byzantin. Ces éditions post-incunables sont partagées entre Josse Bade et Jean Petit, ici à la marque de Petit. Ces deux publications s'inscrivent dans un programme de publications d'historiographes anciens (voir Maillard), à l'initiative de Guillaume Petit (Montvilliers, Normandie, v. 1470-Senlis, 1536), confesseur de Louis XII puis de François Ier, futur évêque de Troyes, grand chasseur de manuscrits et gardien de la bibliothèque royale à Blois. La préface de Josse Bade à l'édition de Paul Diacre le remercie d'avoir déniché le manuscrit qui a permis l'édition. Un manuscrit était alors disponible à la bibliothèque de l'abbaye de St Victor (l'actuel Bnf ms. lat. 14693). L'oeuvre a été conservée à plus d'une centaine de manuscrits dont l'un a servi à Robert Gaguin dans son Compendium de Francorum origine et gestis (voir F. Collard). Une prétendue impression lyonnaise de 1495, mentionnée par Mattaire, semble une édition fantôme qui inspirait déjà des doutes à Brunet. Celle-ci est bien l'originale. Paul Diacre (c. 720-c. 799), bénédictin, précepteur de l'héritier lombard, fut un éminent écrivain. De 782 à 786, il fut à la cour de Charlemagne où il travailla activement sur la réforme carolingienne. Son Histoire des Lombards, écrite dans un latin d'une correction remarquable, va des origines scandinaves jusqu'à la mort du plus grand des rois lombards, Liutprand (c. 685-744), tout en mêlant mythes et réalité. Son ouvrage, bien construit et impartial, nous en apprend beaucoup sur les moeurs contemporains, les relations entre peuples et la situation de l'Occident ainsi que de l'Orient. L'ouvrage de Liutprand (c. 920-972), évêque de Crémone, vaut en particulier pour le récit de ses deux ambassades à Constantinople (949 et 968) dans le but de resserrer les liens entre les Lombards, puis le Saint-Empire romain germanique avec l'Empire byzantin. Il offre un important tableau des relations avec les empires germanique et byzantin. Son premier voyage à Constantinople fut placé sous le signe de l'émerveillement. Dans sa seconde ambassade, il avait pour mission de défendre les droits du nouvel empereur d'Occident, Otton Ier de Saxe, devant l'empereur byzantin Nicéphore Phocas.
