paperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Impossible Rocket. Warner, Marina; Livingstone, Malcolm (illustrator). London: Methuen Children's Books Ltd in association with Walker Books Ltd, 1982. First edition. ISBN 0-416-06370-5. Square hardcover. Pictorial turquoise boards lettered in black, with colour illustration to upper cover. Unpaginated picture book (c.24 pp.). Colour illustrations throughout. Decorative marbled endpapers. Printed and bound by Sagdos S.p.A., Milan. Dedication: "For Adrian M.W." British Library CIP data present. No dust jacket issued. Condition: very Good. Boards clean and bright with sharp corners and only the lightest shelf-rub. Spine unfaded. Binding tight and square. Pages clean, fresh and unmarked; no inscriptions, tears, creases or stains. Endpapers complete and unrubbed. A well-preserved first edition that appears barely read. The last of Warner's four "Impossible" picture books for young children (The Impossible Day; The Impossible Night; The Impossible Bath; The Impossible Rocket), all published by Methuen/Walker in 1981-82 and illustrated by Malcolm Livingstone. Conrad wakes early, follows his shadow, and decides to build a rocket from toys, boxes and bricks so that he can chase the sun. A first tower of stacked objects collapses. He then copies a bird weaving a nest, binds the structure with braces and a belt, and, remembering a breakfast accident with a spoon, improvises a lever for launch. His mother appears as he is about to shout "Lift off!" and suggests an astronaut's breakfast first. The book is a comic lesson in structure, observation and invention rather than a space-travel fantasy. Dame Marina Sarah Warner, CH, DBE, FRSL, FBA (b. London, 1946) is an English historian, mythographer, novelist and critic. Daughter of an English bookseller and an Italian mother, she was educated in Cairo, Brussels and at St Mary's Convent, Ascot, then read French and Italian at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. She is a Distinguished Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and Professor of English and Creative Writing at Birkbeck. Awards include the Holberg Prize (2015), DBE (2015) and Companion of Honour (2022); she was President of the Royal Society of Literature (2017-21). Best known for studies of myth and fairy tale — Alone of All Her Sex (1976), Joan of Arc (1981), From the Beast to the Blonde (1994), Stranger Magic (2011) — she also wrote novels (The Lost Father, shortlisted for the Booker Prize) and a small group of children's books in the early 1980s, of which this is one. The Impossible series sits at the start of a career later devoted to how stories are made and remade. About the illustrator. Malcolm Livingstone illustrated all four Impossible titles and other 1980s children's books, including Eric, the Wild Car. His work here is characteristic of early-1980s British picture-book design: strong colour, crowded domestic interiors, comic collapse scenes, and thought-bubbles that turn Conrad's inventions into miniature space opera. The printed boards, chequered borders and Italian-printed colour plates are typical of Methuen/Walker's picture-book production of the period. Uncommon as a first edition in this condition. Suitable for collectors of Marina Warner, 1980s British picture books, or vintage space-themed children's illustration. Images show the actual copy offered. Malcolm Livingstone (illustrator). …
