Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. xxiii, [25]-175, [1] pp, 2 leaves [list of subscribers]. Original cloth-backed boards. Most of original paper spine label chipped away. Corners of boards worn. A few small tears to top margin of title page. Black ink spot in lower blank margin of first 70 pages. Foxed. Mostly unopened. First Edition. Albert et al., Source Book of Ophthalmology no. 1394. Lobstein "of Strasbourg, studied medicine there and in Paris, and after some years as a military surgeon settled in Strasbourg (1815) as general practitioner and ophthalmologist. His last years were spent in New York. His one ophthalmological work, cited here, is a translation of a treatise by Löbenstein-Löbel" (p. 204). The work by Löbenstein-Löbel is no. 1393 in Albert et al., Grundriss der Semiologie des Auges für Aerzte (Jena, 1817). In the Preface to the book offered here, Lobstein states that in 1818 he translated the work of Löbenstein-Löbel into French (Tableau de la semeiologie de l'oeil à l'usage des médecins). He describes the English-language work offered here as follows: "The author, for a period of twenty years, has directed his attention particularly to the changes which the eye presents, both in sickness and health. His inquiries were directed to this subject for some time before the publication of Professor Loebel appeared. The author, however, proposes to embrace in this work the practical observations of Professor Loebel, in order that he may pay to the memory of this distinguished physician, the merited compliment of introducing his useful and interesting labours to the attention of the enlightened physicians of this rising republic. The present publication may, therefore, be regarded as possessing all the valuable practical information embraced in the original work of Professor Loebel, confirmed, illustrated, and enlarged by the numerous facts and observations derived from the experience of the author" (Preface, p. x).
