Original printed wrappers bound in. = A seldom-seen work by the French malacologist and "Nouvelle École" adept, Étienne Alexandre Arnould Locard (1841-1904). It…deals with the molluscs living in the waters in and around Paris. In the tradition of the "Nouvelle école", several species are recognized where others see only one (e.g. nine species of Dreissensia [i.e. Dreissena]) Provenance: Inscribed by the author on the front wrapper and half-title, viz. a signed dedication to Baron J. de Guerne. Jules de Guerne (1855-1931) wrote a paper on the fresh water bivalve genus Dreissena. Stamp of the Société nationale d'Acclimatation de France, Bibliothèque on the front wrapper and on the last page, below the text; and stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the front free endpaper. A very good, clean copy.

Original, uniform printed wrappers. = The rarest work in the series, Conchyliologie Française. The three other works, by Locard alone, deal with marine, freshwater and terrestrial molluscs from continenta…l France. These are rather common. This is the original publication, published in the society's Annales, new series Vols 46 and 47 (for 1899 and 1900). Soon it became available as a single, repaginated work, issued in Paris by J. B. Baillière. Arnould Locard (1841-1904) was one of France's most prolific malacologists. Eugène Caziot (1844-1931) is renowned for his great work on the terrestrial molluscs of Monaco and adjacent parts of France. Uncut. Simple tear in ffirst volume's front wrapper, and second volume wrapper's spine top and bottom, otherwise an excellent, clean copy. Internally immaculate.

The first three volumes (1892, 1893, 1894) are richly illustrated. The last two volumes, published much later (1899, 1900), seem to be the rarest. The freshwater and deep-water volumes have the original printed wrappers bound in. Provenance: stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the front free endpapers, front wrappers and half-titles. A few spots only, a great set.
