No Binding. Condition: VG. A richly detailed engraving after Jan van der Straet (Stradanus), depicting a dramatic lion hunt on horseback, originally designed for a suite of tapestries commissioned by Cosimo I de Medici for his villa at Poggio a C. Trimmed to the image. Excellent tone and structural stability. Beautiful rich impression, deep blacks. Three small areas of image compensation, all smaller than a centimeter squared. Any edge weaknesses, archivally reinforced. A richly detailed engraving after Jan van der Straet (Stradanus), depicting a dramatic lion hunt on horseback, originally designed for a suite of tapestries commissioned by Cosimo I de Medici for his villa at Poggio a Caiano. This composition belongs to a set of six monumental hunt scenes: lion, boar, deer, bear, buffalo, and wolf. Each is framed by lavish strapwork borders that emulate the look of woven tapestries. The series was among the first of Stradanus s hunting designs to be engraved and widely circulated. Here, a group of mounted hunters, one of whom is being attacked by a lion biting into his back, drive their spears into the beast as others close in. In the background, a wider campaign unfolds across a wooded plain dotted with palm trees, suggesting a North African setting. The hunters, described in the Latin verse below as Mauri ( Moors ), are richly costumed and armed with javelins. The ornamental border incorporates putti, rams heads, fruits, and trophies of the chase, underscoring the aristocratic spectacle. The engraving was originally published in Antwerp in the 1570s by Hieronymus Cock, likely engraved by Harmen Jansz. Muller. The present impression bears the later address M. van Lochom excudit, indicating it was printed in Paris in the 1630s or 1640s by Michel van Lochom, who acquired the original copperplate and reissued it under his own name. The design credit remains intact at lower right: Ioannes Stradanus Flander Inventor. A Latin distich underscores the action: Irritatus acri Leo per venabula telo, Venatoris equi costas, et terga fatigat. Quem mox insultant Mauri, sagulisquae trucidant. The lion, enraged by the sharp hunting spear, exhausts the hunter s horse s flanks and back. Then the Moors, cloaked and armed with javelins, rush upon him and slaughter him. This composition helped launch Stradanus s enduring influence on the visual culture of hunting. It prefigures later masterpieces of martial animal combat by Rubens and others. It also marks a significant moment in the fusion of Flemish printmaking with Florentine courtly iconography. From Hieronymus Cock in Antwerp to Michael Van Lochem in Paris When Hieronymus Cock died in Antwerp in 1570, his widow Volcxken Diericx kept the famous Aux Quatre Vents press running for another three decades. At her death in 1600 the shop s remaining stock was liquidated under the supervision of the engraver-publisher Philip Galle, who had long been associated with Cock. Contemporary notices and later inventories note that a number of those plates were sold en bloc to the Flemish migr Paul (Pauwels) van der Houve, then active in Paris. Van der Houve re-issued several of the newly acquired plates almost immediately among them Cock s four-sheet Nova Descriptio Hispaniae and large city views adding his Paris address but otherwise leaving Cock s signatures intact. The reappear ance of these impressions in the first decade of the seventeenth century provides tangible proof that the physical copperplates themselves, not merely the designs, had crossed the border from Antwerp to Paris. By the 1620s Van der Houve s Paris business was winding down, and a younger Antwerp-born engraver, Michel van Lochem (1601-1647), was rising. Some of van der Houve s plates came. Map.
