"Der erste Eindruck der Krankheitsursache geschieht unläugbar auf das Nervensystem". "Die Cholera galt während der ersten Choleraepidemie in Deutschland 1831/32 als "Nerven-Affection", denn mehrheitlich hat man das Nervensystem für das Organ gehalten, das durch sie eine primäre Schädigung erlitt, auf die alle anderen Symptome zurückzuführen waren. Die "Nervengeflechte des Unterleibs" sah man als die zuerst betroffenen Organe an, von dort aus, so hieß es, werde das übrige Nervensystem und vornehmlich sein sympathischer Anteil, vor allem das Sonnengeflecht, ergriffen. Daraus seien einerseits die "fürchterlichen Nervenzufälle" und die Gefäßkrämpfe und andererseits die "krankhaft veränderte Mischung und Beschaffenheit des Blutes" abzuleiten. Das Miasma oder Contagium, so meinte Johann Christian August Heinroth, treffe zunächst "auf das Erregbare, lebendige", d.h. auf das "überall befindliche Nervenwesen", und von daher sei die "Entsäuerung und Zersetzung der Blutmasse" zu erklären. Justus Christian von Loder glaubte, daß das Miasma unmittelbar das "sympathische oder Ganglien-System der Nerven" angreife. In einem nächsten Schritt würden dadurch das Blut-System und die Verdauungsorgane geschädigt, da es "anatomisch und physiologisch erwiesen" sei, daß das sympathische Nervensystem "für die Blutgefässe und besonders für die Arterien bestimmt ist". Doch könne "der schwache menschliche Verstand nie ergründen", auf welchem Wege und in welcher Weise das Solargeflecht affiziert werde.
