Publisher's pictorial boards. As new. Caracas, Venezuela, 2006. 4to. 120 pp. Richly illustrated, largely in colour. El 11 de abril de 1754 llega a la costa cumanesa la llamada Expedición de Límites. Traía como misión prioritaria fijar los límites de la Provincia de Venezuela al Sur, imprecisos todavía, con el territorio portugués y detener la penetración holandesa en el país. Como a los objetivos políticos se aunaban los de orden científico y económico, el gobierno español dio énfasis a la escogencia de sus integrantes, lo que hacía de ella la de más alto nivel científico llegada a America del Sur. Geógrafos, matemáticos, cartógrafos, médicos, coordinarían las acciones para llevar la misión a feliz término. Para el estudio de la naturaleza fue designado Pehr Löfling, brillante alumno de Linneo, quien ostentaba el título de Botánico Real. Löfling debía observar, recoger y comunicar todo lo relacionado a la naturaleza. Su breve pero fructífera labor recogida en el Iter Hispanicum con la descripción de más de 1000 especies, lo acreditan como el primer científico en estudiar nuestra flora y fauna. Durante ese cometido contrajo la malaria y murió en el Caroní, donde está enterrado al lado de la iglesia de la Purisima Concepción del Caroní. El texto se propone trazar un bosquejo de la dramática odisea de la expedición española y rendir homenaje al ilustre botánico en el 250 aniversario de su muerte. Es a su vez una oportunidad para solicitar que al descubrirse una nueva bromelia, ésta lleve su nombre.
