Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Good dj. First American Edition. [modest shelfwear, a little fading to cloth along top edges, old bookseller's rubber-stamp on front pastedown (Bertrand Smith Acres of Books, Long Beach, California), a little dust-soiling to top of text block; the jacket has shallow but extensive chipping and a few short closed tears along the top edge, a bit more shallow chipping at the base of the spine, a couple of short closed tears at the top of the front panel, and a 1.5" split at the top front flap-fold]. Novel about a farmer in rural England (Bedfordshire) was was "one of those men whose ill-luck it was to be marked 'Indispensable' when the World War came -- not indispensable at the Front where the palms of glory grew, but back where the food of soldiers came from and where the earth itself seemed leagued with the scorners to break the spirit of those to whom the uniform was denied." It's an interesting subject, with its close portrait of a man (the eldest brother in a large family) relegated to holding down the home front while others (including other family members) went off to war, some not to return. His dutiful devotion to the family estate gets in the way of a possible marriage and one point, and in the latter part of the book he seems to suffer from what we would today call "survivor's guilt" -- but I can't help but wonder whether some contemporary readers might not have had a somewhat different take, i.e. that rather than it being "ill-luck" that kept him from going off to earn the "palms of glory" (which might well have ended up draped over his coffin), it was in fact a stroke of good fortune. This was the first of just three novels by this British author (1891-1950), who prior to this had published a few children's books and plays under her own name, saving the "Logan" pseudonym for her novelistic efforts.
